Today's Situation

The complexity of today's needs has overstressed our ability to manage the systems of our global commitment. The statement of this complexity starts with the discovery, capture, and identification of our requirements. It flows through acquisition, test and evaluation, deployment and exercise, to system retirement -- and it overwhelms yesterday's solutions. It overwhelms the system solutions as well as the process solutions used to manage them. Managing the complexity of the system life cycle requires a new approach.

 

Today's Demand

Time and resources are strained. The insertion of new capabilities, the integration of new technology and the interoperability of existing systems are challenges of complexity facing all aspects of our efforts. The need grows daily for us to find a way to manage our operational environment and systems.

 

Our Response

Advantage Development, Inc. strives to provide an unmatched capability to “Discover, Architect, Visualize and Manage the Echelons of the Enterprise.” ™ Ultimately, as stated above, our goal is to provide the capability to "Manage" the enterprise. This capability must integrate from the top, or upper echelons of the enterprise, down to the lowest component level.

We cannot "Manage" the enterprise if we cannot "Visualize" it. Visualization is our ability to draw graphics, build spreadsheets, or print documents. It represents our ability to create useful articulations of the system so that we can convey its context and its content to others. Of course, we cannot draw these visuals if we do not know how the information goes together or how each piece of information relates to the next piece of information, i.e., its architecture.

Every system has an architecture. It is intrinsic. Its architecture has been described using visualization engines including models, documents, databases, and tables or spreadsheets. Each of these visualization engines has provided a different perspective. The principles and practices of architecting are about determining the components, relationships and encapsulations of the system, not about drawing the visualizations. If we can get the semantics of the information correct, we can provide any range of visualizations.

Before we can build the components, relationships, and encapsulations, we need to find the information and provide traceability of this information to its authoritative and original data sources. This process is about Discovering the thematic and conceptual content of the subject. The theme and concepts in the universe of system information can be clustered into taxonomical structures and these structures can be refined into the topologies and ontologies of architecture.

To enable system solutions that integrate from the enterprise down to the billet echelon, we need to rethink our processes. These processes need to use the same information within the proper context, i.e., we need to be able to discover the content and determine its architecture context. To support the long term persistence and reuse of this information, we need to move beyond today's document centric Integrated Data Environments (IDE) towards a model based information structure, an Integrate Information Infrastructure (I3).

An I3 provides the semantic structuring of the system information and reveals the conflicts, gaps, and overlaps in enterprise information. The I3 provides the structure, persistence, traceability, and scalability that enables advanced Architecting processes and provides rigorous accounting for all information, as well as traceability to authorititive and original information. It also provides the discovery and linking of this information to the components, relationships and encapsultions that are described.

To enable solutions globally and domestically, we have developed the principles and practices of system architecting and established the critical delivery capabilities for the successful integration of: Knowledge Discovery, System Architecting, and Information Visualization. These processes are a part of the overall System Engineering environment and represent the front end processes that are critical to complete specification of the Operational Specification.

Our Delivery

Enterprise solutions that represent the composable nature of system architecting and the shaping and bounding of the stakeholders requirements into an engineerable specification, a synthesis of the system form. The decomposable integration of this specification into a functional whole, the analysis of function, through all echelons in an integrated, rigorous and repeatable process.
